   Tom’s River Township in Ocean County, New Jersey is split into three parts: 95 percent of the township is on the mainland, and the remaining five percent of the township is located on Barnegat Peninsula, a long, narrow barrier island separating Barnegat Bay form the Atlantic Ocean. The portions of Tom’s Rover Township are divided into two pieces: Toms River Beaches North and Toms River Beaches South, and Toms River Beaches South are commonly called Ortley Beach.

   Ortley Beach, an unincorporated area within the township, with a population of 1,594 (2000 Census), is named for Mitchell Ortley, a settler who tried unsuccessfully to dredge a channel so that ships could avoid a long trip to Barnegat Inlet. Ortley Beach is a favorite of vacationing families because of the calmer waters on the bay side are relatively shallow and safer for small children.

   Ortley beach is well-known for the famous Surf Club, an ocean-side hangout where people gather to have to enjoy great music, cold drinks, fun and conversation.

Beach open daily mid-June through Labor Day, Visitors must wear beach badges during this time while on the beach.

Lifeguards: On duty 9 to 5 daily mid-June through Labor Day.

Restrooms: On all public beaches.

Showers: Outdoor showers at Ortley Beach

Parking: On-street and in the free municipal lot at Fourth Avenue.

Handicap beach access. Visitors with disabilities may reserve beach wheelchairs by calling the Lifeguard Station at Ortley beach: 732-793-3890  24-hours in advance.

Food and drink (non-alcoholic ) in plastic containers, and coolers, are permitted on the beach. Ball playing and Frisbees are not permitted. There are designated smoking areas on the beach.  Fires and dogs are not permitted on the beaches.                        
Public Beaches:

            Ortley Beach: On the ocean.

            Shelter Cove and Money Island Beach: On Barnegat Bay.
